In Volunteers’ Week, we would like to share news of an exciting new venture at the club.

At the Start of the season, The Club attended an RFU event and were introduced to the charity Star* Scheme. Their mission is, “to make a material difference in the lives of young people and their families who have multiple adverse childhood/community experiences (ACEs) or mental health issues”. This was something that resonated with The Club and we were soon onboard.

In conjunction with the Star* charity, we will be making a difference in the lives of local young people who have experienced, or are experiencing, adversity in childhood. Children who have suffered trauma and would benefit from the rugby experience, will be engaged by Northampton Saints and referred by schools to join our club.

Taking part in team sports, particularly rugby, has a great impact on the personal development of young people. Olney RFC with its centre of excellence, providing quality coaching and safeguarding support, is well placed to enhance this experience for all children and young people and provide them with the opportunity to take part.

The positive family community that Olney RFC offers will provide social, emotional and financial support to these new players and their families. Our coaches and volunteers will receive trauma informed training which benefits all players. This training in addition to everything we already do, will provide them the positive role models, required structure and memorable experiences to our Star players that they may otherwise miss out on.

The impacts produced by the Star program include:
• Star* players regaining control in their lives,
• Creating resilience, confidence and opportunity,
• Increased awareness and conversation around childhood adversity

We’re really looking forward to this step in strengthening our Club community by supporting our local community.
