The Jackson family of Stevington regret to announce that Peter Jackson passed away on the morning of the 30th December 2024.
Peter was a huge presence in local rugby, representing Bedford Modern School, Bedford Athletic, Bedford Blues, Olney and the East Midlands from the late 1950s to the mid 1970s.
A mountain of a man, he worked as a self-employed farmworker all his life but dedicated his most of his spare time to local rugby and cricket. Certainly, the best No 8 never to play for England, he came to Olney in the early 1970s after retiring from a highly successful career at Bedford Blues. Playing at No.8 he made a huge influence on the 1st XV (remember this was the equivalent of Zack Mercer arriving at Olney from Gloucester today). He was a very skilful player and made it a very successful team. There were no leagues in those days but Olney certainly raised their bar with Peter playing and managed to establish some high quality fixtures that are still maintained to this day.
Peter was renowned for enjoying the social side of rugby and had great times in the West End of London usually after playing Old Merchant Taylors, who were pretty much a first-class side in those days. His son Stuart played for the 1st team in the early 1990s to continue the family tie with local rugby.
Peter’s funeral will be held on the Friday, 31st January at 1pm at St Mary the Virgin church, Stevington MK43 7QB with refreshments afterwards at the Royal George, Stevington.
Bright colours, especially Blue and No black please.
The club would like to extend its condolences to his family and friends.
